Some of My Thoughts...

It took me a while to post...but hopefully this project will be worth it!

When I revised my website back a little over a year ago, I had great aspirations for writing something down in this blog space. I didn't really know what that was going to be, to be honest. I have always liked the idea of blogs...I read a number of them on various topics. I envisioned something that was a loose collection of thoughts I was having on things ranging from useful technology I'd added to my teaching, cool papers / science media I'd come across, etc. But in the first few weeks, when the website was still on my mind, I couldn't decide what the first post would be. So I never wrote it. A year passed, and frankly I quite forgot this page existed. That was until, some time in the fall (of 2019), Adam Jeziorski, my good friend and former labmate messaged me on Google Hangouts (yes, I think we are the last people on Earth communicating via that medium) and asked about it. Actually, he made fun of me in the lighthearted sort of ribbing-style friends are great at. He basically concluded that my statement that I "occasionally have some thoughts..." and then a blank page suggested perhaps not a lot of thoughts came into my mind at all. It was hard to argue with him on the optics of it.

I'm not entirely sure how our conversation morphed into discussing side projects, but eventually it came out that Adam was interested, not in starting a blog, but in a podcast. I am a huge podcast fan, and also have a keen interest in audio production (mostly for my teaching), and found this idea very exciting, and we made a plan to launch our own podcast. What else would two nerds start a podcast on, but all things paleolimnological, and in that moment Core Ideas - A Paleolimnology Podcast was born. A logo quickly followed, a Trello board packed with episode ideas...I even used it as an excuse to buy a new mixing board and microphones so we can one day record on the road. As I write this post we have recorded 3 episodes, and have just gotten the show listed on all the major podcast platforms; you can find us on Apple Podcasts, Google Play Music, Stitcher, TuneIn (Spotify coming soon). If there are any other servers you'd like us to load onto just let me know!

You can find information on the show at our website: coreideas.ajeziorski.ca/
Send us an email with comments, etc. at: coreideaspodcast@gmail.com

We're excited to work on this little side project going forward. And I finally figured out a topic for the first blog post. Hopefully it won't be another year before post #2, but no promises.

I've never formally blogged before. But occasionally I have some thoughts on a range of topics that I'm going to try and write down.

"The thing the ecologically illiterate don’t realize about an ecosystem is that it’s a system. A system!
A system maintains a certain fluid stability that can be destroyed by a misstep in just one niche.
A system has order, a flowing from point to point. If something dams the flow, order collapses.
The untrained might miss that collapse until it was too late.
That’s why the highest function of ecology is the understanding of consequences.”
